Every Opendesk design is available to download as a DIY digital fabrication file. This file can be opened with any CAD or CAM software and cut on any full-size CNC router. You can use this file to make a design in your own workshop or local maker space. Remember, if you’re making it yourself you’re in charge! Opendesk can’t be held accountable for any manufacturing issues or defects.
Your digital fabrication file contains a series of shapes identified by lines. These lines are known as polylines and can be read by a computer. They identify each part of the furniture such as it’s legs or beams. You can open this file with any CAD or CAM software and cut parts on any full-size CNC router. Because a CNC router is essentially a large computer controlled drill, it is able to follow lines in the fabrication file and accurately cut each part. Many of the lines are different colours. This indicates that the CNC router should do something different such as cut through the line or engrave on the line.
CNC stands for Computer Numerical Control. CNC Machining is a manufacturing process that involves the use of computers to control machine tools. Tools that can be controlled in this way include lathes, mills, routers and grinders. Opendesk furniture is designed to be made on CNC routers like the one shown above. If you’ve got one of these in your home workshop or local maker space, you’re ready to start making!
Opendesk offers professional CNC workshops paid work making highly refined designs for local customers. On joining the network, you will be granted a commercial license to make Opendesks. You trade under your own brand and deal directly with customers.
